Children of Brock Elementary School are caught up in the drama being presented by Theater LaB

After each dramatic performance, actors engage in some one-on-one with the local school children, giving the kids an opportunity to ask questions, see the costumes up close, handle props and satisfy their curiosity.  The children are an avid, enthusiastic audience.  For many of them, this is their first chance to experience live theater.

Here, some neighborhood boys are seeing an actor close-up, during the question and answer session that follows a performance.

Theater LaB has commissioned local playwrights to write new plays for children and has presented these productions free-of-charge to two neighborhood  HISD elementary schools.

In November, 2000 Theater LaB produced Ashley the Dancing Doll.

This new children's play was commissioned by Theater LaB and written by Houstonian, Renee Smith.  It is an enchanting tale of friendship.  It was produced at both Brock Elementary School and Eighth Avenue Elementary.

The children who see the performances produced by Theater LaB Houston in their school frequently write letters to the organizations that have underwritten these performances.  Here are examples of letters written by children at 8th Avenue Elementary School to Houston's Mayor Lee Brown.

Dear Mayor Lee Brown,

I really enjoyed The Warrior Princess.  The actors were funny and talented.  Thanks for making the play possible.

Dear Ms Juanita Elizondo,

The play my school saw, "The Warrior Princess" was fantastic.  The person who played Sabrina  was a great and funny actor.  The other actors were fantastic too.  We really enjoyed them coming to our school.  It was delightful for them to come and entertain us.
Well, thank you for letting them come and I hope they come once more.

Sincerely,
Heather
