Take a Seat on the Fringe Side

1997 marked the 50th anniversary of the first fringe theater festival held in Edinburgh, Scotland.  Today the annual Edinburgh Fringe has grown to include over 1000 events, and fringe has emerged as a major theater movement.  festivals are held in no fewer than 19 major cities throughout the United States and Canada and numerous others in Europe and Australia

As a proponent of contemporary theater achieving national attention for its programming, Theater LaB Houston was ideally suited to take the lead by initiating and introducing the fringe festival as part of our repertoire.  In 1997 we produced the first Houston Fringe Theater Festival.  It has become an established annual theater event for the City of Houston.  Fringe Festivals are expected to be showcases of theater that is daring, exciting and adventurous.  their programs offer an array of theatrical works -- the Houston Fringe Theater Festival meets this challenge.

As of 2003, the Fringe Festival is not a part of our regular programming.
