Community Outreach Programming

Our theater building at 1706 Alamo Street is located in the First Ward, one of Houston's oldest historic ward districts.  Within walking distance from our venue are two HISD elementary schools -- Brock Elementary on Houston Avenue and Crockett Elementary on Crockett Street.  Since 1997 Theater LaB has developed special theatrical productions and presented them to the student body at both schools.

This program is co-sponsored and completely underwritten by Fiesta.

In Spring 2000 Theater LaB received a grant from CACHH to develop and present a six week bi-lingual "Creative Dramatics Seminar" for the girls in Brock Elementary School.  An experienced teacher and playwright is meeting during after-school hours with girls from the upper grades to develop their writing skills and teach self-presentation skills.  These girls will prepare and present a public performance for their family and the rest of the school body during which they will read from selected writings.  Staff from Theater LaB will present actresses and theater technical people to discuss theater careers and explain how live-theater is staged.  It is fully expected that this program will enhance the self-esteem, writing and public presentation skills of the participants.

This Neighborhood Arts Project is funded in part by a Grant from the  City of Houston and the Texas Commission on the Arts through the Cultural Arts Council of Houston / Harris County.

In 1999 Theater LaB joined forces with the choir of the local St Paul's A.M.E. church on Edwards Street (off 1300 Houston Avenue) to present

"Sing Sweet Gospel    from the fields to the street".

This was a history of Gospel Music using spiritual songs and gospel hymns with a theatrical narrative by Niobe Ngozi.  It was performed by the combined gospel voices of the St Paul A.M.E. Church and the internationally traveled gospel choir from Houston's Kashmere High School.

Theater LaB has been at the forefront of neighborhood revitalization.  For detailed information on Thespian Park, click here. Thespian Park
