Theater LaB Houston opened in 1993 with a very specific mission - to produce the very finest in contemporary theater.  Here are some facts about Theater LaB Houston.

bulletTLH has staged more than 60 productions since its opening in 1993.
bulletAll productions but one have been a Houston or Southwest premiere.
bulletFour productions have been American premieres.
bulletOne production was a World Premiere, commissioned by TLH.

bulletTLH launched Houston's first & original Houston Fringe Festival in 1997.
bulletTLH established the Fiesta First Ward Children's Theater project in 1997.  This provides FREE children's theater productions to our neighborhood kids in their elementary schools, Brock and Crockett.
bulletTLH has commissioned more than 30 Houston area playwrights to write original plays.  TLH produced these works in our children's theater projects and our annual Day Without Art events
bulletIn 1998 TLH launched Thespian Park, a 6500 square foot parcel of land directly across from our 1706 Alamo Street building.  When complete it  will include a landscaped green park and a mural depicting the history of theater.  It is a major revitalization project within our neighborhood.
bulletTLH has been reviewed and featured in numerous national theater periodicals receiving outstanding critical praise for our unique and professional programming.

ARTISTIC ACHIEVEMENTS

June 1999
TLH commissions two new pieces for the annual Fringe Festival.

 Sing Sweet Gospel traces the history of gospel music and is performed as a site-specific production at St Paul's A.M.E. Church (one of Houston's oldest black churches, located only seven blocks from Theater LaB).

Body Ratio 1:8 is an expanded multimedia performance by Women's Works.

May 1999
TLH commissions the children's play Friends...or Else.

April 1999
TLH produces the southwest premiere of the current London-running musical Blood Brothers.

February 1999
TLH brings to Houston  the London-based director, Tessa Walker to direct the US premiere of her play Hysteric Studs.

January 1999
TLH produces the third US production of the controversial play Shopping and Fucking.

December 1998
TLH receives national review in  the national theater periodical In Theater Magazine for the regional premiere of Like Totally Weird.

December 1998
TLH commissions a new piece from the Houston-based group QuaC for its annual Day Without Art production.

TLH commissions children's theater play:
 Josephina and the Toy Gash.

August 1998
The national theater periodical Back Stage runs a review of Houston theater scene.  Stages Theater and Actors Theater comment: "LaBita (Theater LaB Houston) has energized Houston's whole theater scene"; "his influence has been felt in their programming".
